Test Ridden by: Lee Collis (Drac CHR) and Billy Davison (Cartman CHR) Top Speed: Off Road Lee Collis (29.5 mph) off road. On forest track to be confirmed ... WARNING:THRUNTON IS VERY POPULAR WITH WALKERS AND YOU WILL BE HEADING THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION FOR MOST OF THE RIDE WE DON'T WANT YOU TO BREAK YOUR BIKE ON A BOBBLY HAT. GETTING THERE: From the South take the A697 from the A1 north of Morpeth follow this through Longframlington and onto the Moor Hse cross roads, this a cross roads sign posted for Alnwick to the Right and Rothbury to the Left. After the Moor Hse crossroads the road forks to the Left at a mobile phone mast bear left here of the main road, follow the road till you reach the woods and see a gate on the left leading through the woods, park opposite the gate. DON'T BLOCK IT. From the North come from Wooler head south through Powburn passed the Glanton and Whittingham turn off, shortly after the Whittingham turn off, about a mile, there is a right turn sign posted for Thrunton take this and pass through Thrunton. Follow the Road around to the Left passing the Main car park for Thrunton woods and head Downhill and up the other side Just before the top you will see two Bungalows set back on the right, park on the left just after these opposite the gate. DON'T BLOCK THE GATE. If you reach a phone mast you have gone too far. The Ride: Pass through the gate opposite you and follow track until your reach the top, the track turns from forest to moorland track (Bridalway I think) near the top, when you get to the top at the junction turn right and head towards cairns (1.8m). (2.3m) At the last cairn is the start of a rocky descent that turns back into a forest track. As you descend back into the woods a track heads to the right ignore this and bear left to the bottom. (2.75m) At the bottom you will see a post with an orange arrow pointing into the wood. Enter into the wood along some single track. Follow this (gets nice and technical, please try to stop on; it is possible!) (3.35m) Once you come out of the woods you will see a footbridge-cross over this and follow the track uphill to the left. (4.75m) Keep following the track. You'll see the track has a turning to the right, ignore this and head straight on then turn right, then at then end turn left at the seat. (5.5m) At the top the a path heads sharp right, follow this and go through gate. Ride past the peat bogs back into the woods again follow the path which then descends. (5.85m) At the bottom of the descent look for a post with markers, on your right is a is a gorge (Yeah we go down here, it has been used for a MTB race that was on TV). If you wish a track heads up opposite, get a launch from the top of there it is easier. Ride through the gorge and follow the track, you will pass through loads of ferns and head downhill, when this hill levels be ready to stop (or go over the cliff the choice is yours). Drop (by this I mean ride, not fall) down the rocks to the right of this cliff and follow the path along to a fence. (6.1m) Turn right at this fence and follow the path alongside it up the hill, over the stile go straight on to where it turns right and head uphill to the right again. (6.3m) It soon comes to a very steep part (would be very impressed if anyone got up this bit) carry your bike up here and follow path which twists and weaves to the left then turns right up another very steep short bit. Look for a bomb hole. A path heads by a low tree follow this down another good technical part. (6.8m) After the descent you go through a wall. Turn right and take the middle track, follow this all the way to a gate that takes you onto the road, turn right on the road and head back to your car (about 2.5m).
Note: It is best to use Pathfinder map 16 for this route. Test ridden by: Lee Collis (Drac CHR) and John Davison (Clint CHR) Top Speed: 29.2 mph J.Davison Description: This route has a tricky climb of about 3miles which starts off very steep, but is well worth it with a descent of 5miles on grass tracks with great leaps. However, it can get very wet. We first rode it on 31/3/00 and it was very slippy, John had a good slide along on his Arse! That helped name the route and made me piss myself laughing, as he had just overtaken me for the first time (ever) and gained the record speed for this ride. GETTING THERE: From the South:From Morpeth follow A697 to Weldon Bridge then head for Rothbury, to Thropton. Through Thropton following road for about 2½ miles to Flotteron farm, bear of right following the sign post for Harbottle. Follow the road to Harbottle, pass through Harbottle and after about 2½ miles you will cross a bridge into Alwinton. Follow the road for about another 6miles look for Barrowburn Fm, shortly after is a white bridge with a road to the right park here. You should see a signpost pointing the Bridle way to Rowhope. From the North:Travel from either Alnwick to the A697 or from Coldstream through Wooler. Take the turning at the Bridge of Aln into Whittingham. Cross over the bridge at Whittingham and turn Left and head for Netherton. Once your reach Netherton turn left at the junction and follow road to Alwinton, cross the Bridge into Alwinton. Follow the road for about another 6miles look for Barrowburn Fm, shortly after is a white bridge with a road to the right park here. You should see a signpost pointing the Bridle way (BW) to Rowhope. THE RIDE: GR: 859195 Start at Slymefoot (not marked on any maps basically it is at the bridge) look for the sign post (SP) that points up the North bound road (marked private rd on gate but is a Bridal way) on the Alwinton side of the bridge, follow this road until the tarmac ends. GR: 855125 Distance 1m Just after Trows (2nd farm) go across the ford on the Left hand track and through the gate head North up the Bridal way, this is a fairly worn by tractors and is easy to follow, head for Little Wardlaw. GR: 864145 Distance 2.5m Follow the most visible path upward look for a marker post with the BW directions turn Left heading for Windy Gyle, it forks a few yards up keep to the left hand one although it don't matter. GR: 854150 Distance: 2.8m Look for another marker post turn Left NNW for Windy Gyle following the Pennine Way downhill (it is virtualy a 5mile descent from now) to Pea Knowe, just keep slightly to the right on the track and as close to the right hand fence as possible. GR: 835150 Distance: 4.4m Next to a style you will see a SP, you shouldn't miss it. Look on the SP for 'The Street and Coquet Valley' and follow this South, (It looks as if its points straight on.) From now just keep follow the BW on the most worn track there is, passing through gates and over styles which will keep you pointed in the right direction. At 6m you will see a marker post for some BW crossroads go straight on here. eventualy the final blistering descent will take you back to the bridge at Slymefoot. Total Distance: 8miles
